Earth's mighiest heroes return for the second round of over-the-top action and cheesy one liners in "The Expendables 2." The film sees the return of major characters Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgreen, Jet Li, and Bruce Willis alongside wlecoming newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Jean Claude-Van Damm, and Chuck Norris to the film franchise. When the first "Expendables" was released I wasn't a big fan. I didn't grow up with these actors so it wasn't as big a deal to me as it was to others to see these characters together and found the film way to over-the-top and cheesy. I remember watching the first one on DVD and after seeing someone get their heads blown clear off in the opening scene, I got up and turned the film off as I just thought that was terrible and I never picked up the film again. What got me interested in this film was a few key factors; the new actors in Chuck Norris and JCVD, Chuck Norris getting Stallon to tone the film down just a notch both in violence and language, the trailer looking completely better than the last film and Stallone stepping from behind the camera and giving the reigns to Simon West. Now that I have seen the film I can honestly say this is some of the most fun I have had seeing a movie at the theater in a long time.
The thing I liked most about this movie was the character interactions and how less serious they took themselves then from what I saw in the last film. The characters played very well off of eachother and it seemed like they were having a lot more fun in this film than in the last one. There were even a few parts in the film that had me laughing, especially with Dolph Lundgreen's character who had a lot of good lines in the film. With this being a throwback to the classic 80's style of action films, you're still going to get lines of dialouge that leave you shaking your head like why would they put that in there, but these lines are really far in between so it really doesn't effect the scenes that much. I just really enjoyed the acting in this film especially from Jean Claude-Van Damme who played the main antagonist and was really happy to see him back on the big screen because I honestly believe he is still a good actor and does a really good job in this film. The main character everybody was excited for was Chuck Norris and my theater even started clapping and cheering when he appeared on screen. I will say that every scene he was in this movie, he was just awesome. I mean he is Chuck Norris how could he disappoint, the best line he had in the film was when he made a reference to the Chuck Norris facts joke. The main thing was all the actors did good and helped the film out a lot.
With the main focus of these films being put on throwing all these actors together, the plot of the film is really just a reason to put these characters together and sort of sits in the background. There were points of the film especially in the third act were I started wondering what the main motivation of JCVD's character was but it didn't bother me that much in the film. The plot of the film reminded me of the 80's film from the past where they were just action heavy and I believe in these type of films its not that big of a deal. There also were some plot inconsistencies that were hard to overlook especially with the changes in Bruce Willis's character and a few other things story wise that were hard to look past in the film but honestly know one came to this movie for the plot. The action was the main draw and the action was great. Every fight scene was thrilling and choregraphed real well. The final fight was the best of the film, the only problem I had with it was cut short and that can be because problem time constraints or the obvious limitalities of the actors involved.
Overall if you are a fan of the first Expendables film or if you just enjoy classic action films, then you will love this movie. The film improves on the problems that were involved with the first film especially in terms of dialouge and characterization, and in the end makes this an enjoyable experience people of all ages can enjoy and I recommend you go see it.
Final Grade:   B
