Detention (2012) - Film Review

Director: Joseph Kahn

Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cooke, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke

MPAA Rating: Rated R

It was only a matter of time before they did a remake of "Scream" but I never expected it to be more self-aware  than Scream was.

Detention follows a group of stereotypical students most notably the high school slacker played by "Hunger Games" Josh Hutcherson being held in detention after a group of grizzly murders leave them the main suspects of the investigation. When I first saw the trailer for this film, I new it had potential. It started its run at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year and was a hit with all the fans but after seeing this film I believe this is one of the craziest most ADD films I have seen in a very long time. Just by watching the opening scene of this film, you know this is going to be an incredibly crazy ride.
The film is directed by Joseph Kahn who directed the film "Torque" in 2004 and that high octane style of film directing is ever so present in this film, even taking a shot at the film in the movie. With this type of directing, it does distract a lot for the film. The film tried way to hard to be self-aware and a lot of the time made it not look as good. The film also featured a lot of twists, not getting to spoiler heavy some of the twists worked but it was about an even amount of these twists that didn't land and didn't even make since.
The acting by the way was really good, all the characters I believed did a really good job portraying their stereotypes. The two standouts to me were Josh Hutcherson and Shanley Caswell who did a really good job and in the midst of all the craziness actually rooted for them as characters just not as a couple which is hard to come by these days. One thing I didn't expect was Dane Cook to give a good performance, I didn't even know that was possible.
Even with all the stuff that happens in this film, it still offered up a decent time. The film had some good laughs and when they did self-awareness right, they did it right even having me LOL once or twice but its not to hard to see this miss potential with this film but I can see this film somewhere years down the line being a cult classic loved by the masses.
Final Grade: C
