Film Review: The Avengers (2012)

Director: Joss Whedon
Cast: Robert Downey Jr,, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johannson, Tom Hiddleston
The summer movie season has officially begun and no better way to begin than with the highly anticipated "Marvel's The Avengers" from Director Joss Whedon. This film series began in 2008 with "Iron Man" when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) visited Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) at his home to recruit him for The Avengers Initiative and the following four films; "Incredible Hulk", "Iron Man 2", "Thor", and "Captain America: The First Avenger" have laid the ground work for the inevitable "Marvel's The Avengers" film. The main premise of this film is that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from "Thor" comes through a portal created by the tesseract cube that was fished out of the ocean in "Captain America: The First Avenger" and plans to use the cube and all of its power to unleash war on Earth and Nick Fury is led with no choice but to bring in the The Avengers to save the day.

The big question that was on everyone's mind when they new the Avenger movie was coming was if writer and director Joss Whedon could bring in all these different characters and create one cohessive film that represents all the characters. My answer to this question was a big YES! Joss Whedon, who is an avid fanboy and has spent most of his time working in television, understands these characters to such a degree that he knows how to have the characters and interact with each other. Even smaller characters in the film such as Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) were able to have their moments in the spotlight.
A big plus to having a great script is having great actors and The Marvel Cinematic Universe is chock full of great actors. The biggest praise has to go out to Robert Downey Jr. who I believe his portrayal of Tony Stark is one of the best acting performances out there right now. Downey hits the perfect note of egotism and fear that is crucial when playing a complicated character such as Tony Stark. One thing I was worrisome about was having Mark Ruffalo take over the role of Bruce Banner that was previously held by Edward Norton in "The Incredible Hulk" in 2008. It's no secret to the people I know that I am not a big fan of Mark Ruffalo and was upset when he was chosen as Bruce Banner two years ago, but after seeing the film I can honestly say he did a really good job as Bruce Banner in the film. While his performance was not as good as Edward Norton, I can now say that I am fine with Ruffalo taking the reigns and hope to see more of his character in future Marvel films.
One thing I questioned when I saw the full outline of the film, and saw that Loki was going to be the main villain after he was defeated so easy in "Thor" last year. After seeing the film I can now understand why Loki was chose as the villain of the film as his character help leads to future characters that will be in the next Avengers film. The only complaint I have of the Loki character, and this is nothing to do with Tom Hiddleston as an actor but more with the character was written to cliched and came off a little cartoonish for me and that was my only real complain with the movie as a whole.
One thing that surprised me in the film was the amount of humor. Director Joss Whedon found a good mix of humor with dread that I believe helped the film appeal to more people and why it is defeating so many box office records across the world. The film had me laughing throughout the entire thing more than most comedies now a days have me laugh. While The Dark Knight films thrive off being more darker superhero films I believe that the lighter touch in the film leads better to the marvel universe.
The action in the film was also top notch as I honestly believe the film didn't need 3D, which I did not see the film in, to pack a thrilling punch. All the fight scenes from the beginning to the final fight scene in Manhattan were choregraphed really well and even when they seemed to drag, they were still able to entertain us.
As a film that had been four years in the making, I honestly say that "Marvel's The Avengers" is one of the best superhero films ever made and I hope more films take note that if you planned something instead of rushing it to the screen that in the end you can make a more high quality film and that is what writer and director Joss Whedon has created. I can't wait to see where this film universe goes, and I recommend if you are one of the few people who have not seen this film that you go out and see it as soon as possible as this is an entertaining film, with great acting and action, that the entire family can enjoy.

With over billions and billions of comic book fans and Marvel practically breathing down his neck, Joss Whedon was given one job and one job only and that was to not screw this up. Thankfully, he doesn't even come close to screwing it up and makes this one of the funnest superhero movies in recent time. Nice write-up Jonathan.
